The authorities in Kabale have arrested eight traders and confiscated 35 heads of cattle for violating the quarantine rules.
The traders were intercepted by law enforcement officers at Karukara Market while attempting to smuggle the cattle into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Quarantine on livestock was imposed on districts in south and south-western Uganda early this year following the outbreak of the highly-contagious Foot and Mouth Disease.
The Kabale district Veterinary Officer, Dr. Kabakiraho Bahunde, maintains that the quarantine is still in place, to control the spread of the foot and mouth disease.
Buhunde however said that the Department allows the movement of breeding animals in Vehicles on condition that the traders have sought permission from the regional veterinary Officers.
The eight traders will be prosecuted in court while the animals will be destroyed.
