Twenty Suspected Witches Lynched in Mbale

Crime
Twenty suspected witches have since January this year been lynched in Mbale, Sironko and Manafwa districts.

The villagers claim the witches compete among themselves, kill people and make others disappear mysteriously to enhance their power.

The Eastern Uganda Regional Police Commander, Taire Idwege says nine suspected witches were lynched in Manafwa district, while five others were killed in Mbale and Sironko districts respectively.

Another couple was killed last night in Rwagogo village in Manafwa district for alleged witchcraft.

Idwege says most of the victims are either hacked to death by gun welding mobs or stoned to death. He says preliminary investigation show that the victims are mainly the elderly.

Idwege says the police are concerned by the rate at which the residents are taking the law into their hands.
