Malaba Town Council Officials Charged with Abuse of Office

News
The Tororo chief magistrate's court has charged four Malaba Town council senior officials with abuse of office.

The officers are Philip Opolot, the Malaba town clerk, Samuel Okalany, the deputy town clerk, the Malaba district chairman, Alfred Obore and the secretary for works, George Omaset.

The four were yesterday jointly charged with the former Tororo Chief administrative officer, Sylvester Oboth and the deputy CAO Julius Ogema.

The court presided over by Tororo chief magistrate, Pruff Rutakirwa, heard that in August 2006, Oboth and Ogema caused the district a financial loss of 65 million shillings by signing and depositing a crossed cheque on Okalany's account.

Opolot, Okallany, Omaset and Obore are accused of authorizing the release of money disguised as commission from Malaba town council to the district, without the approval of the town council.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges, but were denied bail and remanded in Morukatipe Prisons till March 29, when the case comes up for hearing.
