One of the leading secondary schools in Kaberamaido is in darkness after a bank disconnected its solar electricity system over an unpaid loan.
Ochero Village Bank in Kaberamaido town is demanding the payment of a 400,000 shilling loan from Midland Secondary School. The loan obtained from Ochero Village Bank was used to finance the purchase of the school's solar system.
The director of the bank, Charles Olobo, says that despite several notices to the school administration, it has failed to pay off the bank balance. He says no viable reason has been on why the school continues to default on its loan payments.
However the headmaster of Midland Secondary School, Raymond Esenyu, says his students are being made to suffer needlessly. He contends that the school owes no money to the bank and has filed a case with the police to have the solar system reconnected.
Midland Secondary School is one of the private schools in Kaberamaido that is partnering with Government in the implementation of the Universal Secondary Education program.
