News
The Government of Finland has donated 21 million shillings to disabled women in Masaka District.
The funds are channeled through a Finland based NGO, Abilis Foundation and a local CBO, Masaka Disabled Women's Association.
Gyaviira Nalubega, General Secretary of the Masaka Disabled Women's Association, 90 pigs and 2,500 broiler chicken are being distributed to the women. She says the initial donation will benefit 50 families in the sub-counties of Lwengo, Buwunga, Kyamuliibwa, Nyendo Senyange and Masaka Municipality. The additional funding will cater for the rest of the district.
Nalubega explains that the fund is intended to boost the incomes of disabled women and to improve their standards of living. She says the Masaka Disabled Women's Association has started to source for markets for the chicken in southern Sudan.
It is estimated that there are about 10,000 disabled women living in Masaka, about half of them are heads of families.
