The former Health Minister, Jim Muhwezi, has been released on Bail by the High Court Judge, Moses Mukiibi.
Muhwezi was on Monday this week charged with four charges of embezzlement, theft, abuse of office, and causing financial loss. He was sent on remand in Luzira by Buganda Road court chief magistrate, Margaret Tibulya.
He however applied for bail on grounds that he was of advanced age and gravely ill. According to his bail application, Muhwezi argued that he suffered a stroke in 20002 and needs specialized treatment.
In his ruling this afternoon, Justice Mukiibi, ruled that he found Muhwezi proper to be grated bail and that he had fulfilled the bail conditions. The Judge considered Muhwezi's advanced age, 56, and substantial sureties.
Ministers Kahinda Otafiire, Mwesigwa Rukutana, former East African Community Secretary General Colonel Amanya Mushega and Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament Winnie Matsiko stood surety for him.
Muhwezi is accused of causing financial loss of 774 million shillings which was requisitioned from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) fund account by Alice Kaboyo, a former state house employee.
Jointly charged with Captain Mike Mukula, Muhwezi is also accused of unlawfully withdrawing 263 million shillings from the Gavi account. He is also accused of embezzling state funds from the Gavi account and disbursing the funds to the first lady's office.
