Volunteers Position Themselves for CHOGM

News
Hundreds of Ugandans seeking to rub shoulders with world leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), conference in November have taken a swift action to apply for jobs as volunteers.

During a visit to the foreign affairs ministry recently, Uganda Radio Network, found hundreds of applications being sorted out by ministry officials.

Many people have applied to act as drivers, ushers and assistants despite the fact that the jobs have not yet been advertised for.

Some of the applicants said that CHOGM is a once in a lifetime opportunity which must be positively exploited.

But the CHOGM National taskforce chairman, Kagole Kivumbi, says that the taskforce has not yet sought for volunteers. He however warned that some unscrupulous people are conning people under the guise of recruiting them into CHOGM committees.

Kivumbi says that the task force will soon advertise and select an events management company that will be tasked to recruit volunteers. He says the events management company will be identified by the end of this month.

He however said that the media sub committee will require up to 50 journalists to work at the media centre which will be set up at Munyonyo.

Kagole said that up to 700 international journalists are expected to cover the meeting.
