The Amwonya Rhino Dramactors director has been convicted and sentenced to two months in jail, charged with theft of Global Fund money.
Bongo Gilbert, was arraigned before the Lira Chief Magistrates court, charged with theft of 2.2 million shillings from the global fund project. The money was given to the drama group to sensitize the community on Tuberculosis, Malaria and Aids through drama.
Court presided over by the chief magistrate, Gabriel Nyipir, heard that on September 29th 2005, Bongo was invited to the Global Fund office in Kampala and given 5.2 million for the sensitization program. He however deposited the money onto his personal account.
Prosecution said that on being pressurized by the drama group members, Bongo released 3.2 million shillings but failed to remit the remaining 2.2 million shillings.
The Chief magistrate ruled that Bongo should be jailed for two months and also ordered him to repay the money.
Bongo had earlier pleaded for clemency on grounds that he is suffering from Tuberculosis and liver complications.
