African Governments Agree on Plan to End Acute Hunger in Eastern Africa

Uganda, together with five other African governments, have today agreed on a roadmap to tackle the root causes of rising hunger across eastern Africa.

A statement from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) says the roadmap is the result of months of planning capped by two days of talks in Nairobi that ended on Tuesday between government representatives of Uganda, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. It is hoped the plan could avert a major crisis that could place more than 20 million people in the region in need of emergency assistance.

Kjell Magne Bondevik, UN Special Humanitarian Envoy to the Horn of Africa, said Eastern Africa is hit by some of the world's most severe food crises, which have been aggravated by climate change, environmental degradation, political and armed conflicts. He said he international community
