Police in Gulu have arrested a 55-year-old woman for causing grievous harm to her granddaughter.
Christine Lamot, a resident of, Laroo division in Gulu municipality, used a panga to inflict deep cuts on her 11-year-old grand daughter.
The criminal investigations officer, Richard Ochieng, says Lamoot accused the girl of stealing 200 shillings.
The girl- Maurine Atimango, a Primary three pupil at Gulu Prison Primary School was rushed to Gulu referral hospital this morning.
Speaking from her hospital bed, the girl admitted that she stole the money to buy a cob of maize because she was hungry.
The woman has been detained at Gulu central police station.
Meanwhile, police in Gulu have recorded a significant increase in the number of child abuse related cases.
According to the CID officer, most of the cases are committed by parents and guardians.
Officials at Laro Pece Women's Association, a children's organization say, the association is taking care of 46 children who fled their homes due to child abuse. The children are aged between two months and 18-years.
