Gov't to Vet Ugandan Athletes

News
Government plans to set up a committee that will scrutinize the credentials of Ugandan athletes before they can participate in International games.
The plan is in response to public concerns about devious deals by some sports officials while selecting athletes for international duty.
Jasper Aligawesa, the Secretary General of National Council of Sports (NCS), says the Uganda Olympic Committee took a larger number of athletes to Algiers without Government consent.
Government sponsored 10 athletes to the games in Algiers, but the Council later discovered that the Olympic Committee had taken an excess of 26 athletes many of whom were unfit.
The matter is now subject to a decision by the Board of the National Council of Sports which is mandated to take the appropriate disciplinary measures.
NCS is the supreme organ charged with managing sports in Uganda.
Jasper Aligawesa says Council plans to institute a selection panel charged with vetting athletes for international tournaments in order to eliminate quacks that have marred Ugandan sport.
