Anti-riot Police Deploys in Manafwa

News
Anti-riot police have been deployed, in Manafwa district following an outbreak of violent clashes in the district.

The clashes have been sparked off by a group of people opposed to the location of the newly created Sub-county headquarters in Bubwaya parish.

Residents of Ikali parish who are opposed to the location of the new sub county headquarters clashed with residents of Bubwaya parish, prompting a fierce battle between the two parties.

On Monday, the Ikali parish residents dug trenches along the Manafwa-Butiru road, cutting off traffic between the two parishes.

The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Alphonse Mbuga, says the rioters stormed Buwaya parish and destroyed several banana plantations including that of the Manafwa district Chairperson, Walimbwa Peke.

A teacher of Nanwala primary school, Ikundu Ituku, has been arrested in connection with the riots.

Mbuga says the anti-riot police will remain in the area for as long as it takes them to restore calm in the area.
