Floods, Landslides Devastate Sironko District

News
Sironko district has been ravaged by floods and Landslides caused by torrential rainfalls, over the past five days.

The Sironko District LC5 Chairperson, Wambi Kibale, says the Landslides have caused massive destruction to infrastructure and property. The worst affected areas are Zesui and Masaba sub-counties.

Wambi says the two sub counties have been rendered inaccessible because the roads have been covered by debri of mud washed away from the mountain.

The landslides have also destroyed roads, coffee plantations and two primary schools in Bufopo parish in Zesui Sub County. The affected schools are Bugobira and Nagoya primary schools.

Elsewhere, the lower areas of the district that border Teso are submerged in the floods.

Wambi says hundreds of people have also been displaced by the floods.

In Kampala, Two foot bridges constructed in Kawempe division have been washed away by the floods.

Pedestrians using the same road have to use a plank placed across the running water at a fee of 100 Shillings.

Another bridge on the road connecting Gayaza road and Kawempe yesterday cracked under the heavy weight of a lorry that was transporting timber to Kawempe.
