Kalangala Leaders Propose Name Change to Attract Tourists

News
Kalangala District authorities, hope that their efforts to boost the district's profile will be helped by a change to a name that emphasizes the district's tourism strengths.
The authorities want the District name changed from Kalangala to Ssesse Islands District.
Kalangala district is made up of 84 islands scattered around Lake Victoria. The islands were joined into a district in 1989.
But the Kalangala woman Member of Parliament, Ruth Nvumetta Kavuma, argues that the name Kalangala doesn't really grab the tourist's attention to the other islands, leaving them in obscurity.
She is optimistic that the name change could attract more tourists to the other islands.
The proposed name change has been supported by Moses Kabuusu, the Kyamuswa constituency member of parliament, and Fred Badda, the Bujumba constituency member of parliament,
Badda says that the district leaders plan to consult the people over the proposed name change. The matter will then be forwarded to parliament for further debate.
Recently, the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, said that the Islands were historically named Ssesse Islands, a name that best suits the districts geographical set up.
