Besigye back to Luzira despite court Bail

Crime
Embattled opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye was returned to the Luzira prison in Kampala yesterday morning despite being granted bail by the Uganda high court.

Besigye appeared at the high court yesterday morning to sign bail forms, which should have guaranteed that he walks free. But shortly after, was told he could not leave.

A senior prisons official presented a remand warrant from the Military General Court martial saying that Besigye would remain in prison because of the two charges against him before the military Court.

Besigye's wife Winnie Byanyima, said, the legal team and his political party will continue to fight for his release.

Military police said that Besigye had to face charges of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons in the court Martial.

A hearing in the military court is set for Dec. 19, 5 days after the nomination exercise of presidential candidates.

Besigye's lawyer Yusuf Nsibambi insisted that Besigyes detention is illegal.

Last Friday, the High Court Judge James Ogoola granted Besigye on charges of treason and rape, saying liberty and freedom were fundamental rights.
