Ssembabule Cop Wounded in Pursuit of Drug Traffickers

News
Justus Akankwasi, a policeman attached to Ssembabule police post has been wounded seriously, in pursuit of suspected drug traffickers in Ssembabule District.

Akankwasi was wounded in a police operation launched in Kyabi trading center, Lugusuulu Sub County yesterday. The operation was intended to crackdown on suspected drug traffickers in the area.

In an attempt to arrest the suspects, the policeman was instead rounded up by some suspects wielding sticks. They beat him up to almost unconsciousness, prompting the intervention of other policemen. Police was forced to shoot in the air to disperse the raging suspects. Akankwasi was then rushed to Ssembabule hospital where he is admitted in critical condition.

Police managed to arrest four suspects. These are Patrick Ssenkungu, Nelson Kateregga, Mayanja and Mulumba.

Enoch Hatagimaana, the officer in charge of Kyabi police post, says the suspects are part of a bigger group of suspected drug traffickers that have of recent infiltrated the district. He says the group has also been behind the numerous cattle thefts in Ssembabule.

Hatagimaana said that the four suspects are being held at Ssembabule Police station pending an investigation into the whereabouts of the other suspects.
