A Ugandan documentary film depicting the struggles and triumphs of children living in Patongo Internally Displaced Persons Camp has been short listed to compete for the prestigious Oscar Academy Award.
A statement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts ad Sciences says the documentary, War/Dance, is one of 15 films on the short list. Eight of the films cover conflicts from World War II to Iraq.
War/Dance is a documentary about a group of school children who struggle against the odds of living in an IDP camp to travel to Kampala for the National Schools Music, Dance and Drama Competition. The film follows their progression from a small ragtag team hit by the ravages of the northern Uganda war to national champions of the performing arts.
The list will be reduced to five from 15 by the Academy in January, and a winner will be announced with other Oscars on February 24th next year.
Other films short listed are Lake of Fire, a highly-praised portrayal of the battle over abortion and Please Vote for Me, about children in China holding an election.
