A peaceful Christmas Eve is what many residents in eastern Uganda are giving thanks for today.
Police in the region say no incidents of robbery, murder, assault or road accidents were reported last night. In the past Christmas Eve has been one of the deadliest nights of the year with drunken brawls and reckless driving causing immense suffering for residents.
Christopher Kwerit, the Southeastern Regional Police Commander, says he has tightened his operation by increasing the number of mobile police patrols and traffic police. He says the extra deployment is particularly along the Iganga-Bugiri Road and the Mbale-Tirinyi Road, which have been scenes of several fatal accidents this month.
At the border district of Busia, the District Police Commander Isaac Amanya, says foot patrols are on the alert to ensure peace along the Uganda-Kenya border this Christmas. He says the regular foot patrols are being joined by mobile police patrols to counter criminal activity over the holidays.
