Police in Rakai have arrested three fishermen for the alleged murder of a 1-year-old boy in a ritual sacrifice.
The three suspects have been identified as Juma Kibirige, Emmanuel Kizza and Magangala Nabukubizi, all residents of Kasensero landing site.
Juma Okungo, the Rakai District Police Commander, told journalists that the trio murdered Peter Makumbi, on Saturday night and cut off his genitals, tongue and nails.
According to Okungo, the boy went missing from his parent's home on Saturday evening; shortly after his mother entered their house leaving him outside.
Livingstone Makumbi, the boy's father, reported the matter to police prompting an immediate search for the boy. Some neighbour's however noted that Kibirige, one of the suspects had previously been sighted around Makumbi's home.
The residents accompanied by police stormed Kibirige's home and found a shirt that the boy was wearing at the time he disappeared. Kibirige was immediately arrested and on interrogation admitted to the murder and led the police to the sight where the body was dumped.
He also disclosed the identities of two of his accomplices leading to their arrest. The trio told police that they were taking the body parts to a witch doctor, in return for wealth.
The district police commander says that police are investigating the claims and if found true the witchdoctor may also be arrested.
Okungo says that the suspects are held at Kaliisizo police station and will soon appear before court to answer charges of murder.
