Local Government Minister wants Laziness Criminalized

News
In Kabale, laziness may soon become a crime. That is, if the State Minister for Local Government, Hope Mwesigye, has her way.
Mwesigye, who is also the Woman Member of Parliament for Kabale, has said that residents who do not have any meaningful income generating activities should be arrested for promoting and abetting poverty. Speaking at the NRM Day celebrations in Kyanamira sub-county, Mwesigye said it is shameful that some people with homes and sizeable compounds do not even own a chicken to lay eggs and have not planted crops for food.
The Minister asked the local governing councils to institute bylaws that will punish people who are not doing enough to combat poverty. She reasoned that such behavior was against government policies of poverty eradication and support for prosperity for all programs.
Mwesigye's proposal was however met with weak applause. Many district officials, including top NRM cadres, shunned the function and were it not for a few loyal civil servants and school children, the ceremony would have gone unnoticed.
