UPDF Chopper Crashes in Abim

News
A UPDF chopper has crashed in Abim district.

The chopper, an MI-24 gunship, crashed last evening at around 5pm in Nyakwai Sub-county, Abim district killing the pilot.

The dead pilot has been identified as Capt. Kokas Okure formerly attached to Soroti UPDF air force base.

Four other crewmembers survived the crash and were evacuated and taken to Matany hospital in Moroto district.

Some people who witnessed the crash in Nyakwai, say the chopper, which was coming from the direction of Soroti, was flying at a very low altitude before it crashed. The crash was reportedly preceded by heavy clouds of dust triggered off by strong winds.

Major Paddy Ankunda, the Army Spokesperson has confirmed the incident, but declined to give details of the crash or the identities of the crewmembers. He however says that the army is trying to establish the cause of the crash.

The wreckage of the helicopter was by this morning still lying at the crash site in Nyakwai Sub-county.
