The Gulu municipal primary schools athletics competition has been called off and schools closed, following a tragic incident yesterday in which lightening killed two pupils and left 29 others injured.
Aldo Okot Otto, the Municipal Sports Officer, says the dead have been identified as Patrick Okello of Gulu Public Primary School and Ronald Ojok, a pupil of St Maurice Primary School.
Otto says 19 pupils have been hospitalized at various health facilities in the town, while six including a teacher have been discharged.
Acire Jose Jola, the municipal Principal Education Officer says an emergency meeting has been convened to discuss the next plan of action.
Okot says the lightening struck Pece Stadium at around 4:20 pm as the pupils took part in the athletics competition organized to select the municipal team for the national athletics tournament set to take place later this month in Adjumani.
A total of 36 primary schools in Gulu municipality were taking part in the tournament.
Geoffrey Otim, the LC3 chairperson of Pece Division where the stadium is located says the stadium has a history of similar tragic incidents.
He recalled that one pupil was killed when lightening struck during a similar sporting activity in the 90s.
