Mubende -Banyoro petition Museveni over unresolved Buyaga Bugangaizi referendum

News
The Mubende-Bunyoro committee has petitioned President Yoweri Museveni demanding for the full implementation of the results of the 1964 Buyaga-Bugangaizi referendum.

The Banyoro claim that the 1964 referendum which returned the two ilost countiesi of Buyaga and Bugangaizi from Buganda, was partially only implemented.

They demand for rights over their ancestral, which remains under absentee Baganda landlords by December 11.

The committee also wants the 2002 Kiyonga Committee on Land and Ethnic Tensions in Kibaale to implement its recommendations.

The Kiyonga Committee was established to investigate inter-tribal clashes between ethnic Banyoro and migrant Bakiga, mainly over land and political leadership.

In April 2001, when the numerically dominant Bakiga succeeded in electing one of their members as a councilor for the district, the Banyoro rejected the results because they regard the Bakiga as aliens on their land.

Recently government appointed a new commission headed by Prof. Ruth Mukama to further investigate the tensions in the area.
