Ndeje University Students Reject Fees Increase

News
Several students at Ndejje University have vowed not to accept the new tuition increases.
A circular issued by Barnabas Ssekabembe, the academic registrar, shows a 100 percent increase in the fees structure.
According to the circular, registration fees were raised from 20,000 to 40,000 shillings, , examination fees raised from 20,000 to 40,000 shillings and computer fee raised from 50,000 to 100,000 shillings.
Also affected is the library fee which has been raised from 50,000 to 100,000 shillings while the accommodation fee has been raised from 200,000 to 400,000 shillings.
The student will also be required to pay an additional 70,000 shillings for the Development fees, 10,000 shillings for an identity card and 30,000 shillings for guild fee.
During a meeting held at the University's Kampala campus, today, the students said the new increases are unrealistic and only intended to block their study progress.
Several students argued that they chose to study at Ndeje University because education costs were relatively cheaper, compared to the other universities.
Robert Tusiime, the university's minister of Justice accompanied by the guild president Winston Bbossa, assured the University secretary and other members of the administration that the new fees structure is unrealistic and must be abandoned.

The rise in the tuition fees has been pegged to the increase in the cost of food and other commodities.
The increase was received with bitterness by the students at the Luwero campus.
