Kaberamaido Prison Raiders Wanted to Release their Colleague - Police

Crime
A group of armed men, who attacked Kaberamaido Government Prison on Saturday night, did so to help their friend escape from prison, police says.

The Kaberamaido Officer in charge of Criminal Investigations, Johnson Edoku, says the gang raided the prison to release David Eriku from jail. Eriku was on remand, pending trial for illegal possession of a firearm.

On Saturday night 7 armed men attacked Kaberamaido Government Prison, releasing 15 inmates and stealing 33,000 shillings and prison farm implements.

Officer Edoku discloses that the man who masterminded the attack, Richard Enyenu, was arrested on Sunday and confessed to the crime.

Both Enyenu and Eriku were arrested early this year for illegal possession of firearms. The Director of Public Prosecutions released Enyenu because of lack of evidence, but held Eriku pending further investigations.

Police has re-arrested Eriku and sent him back to jail. He will now face additional charges of escaping from jail.

Meanwhile, 5 of the 15 inmates who were released on Saturday have handed themselves over to the prisons authorities. 9 others are still on the run and are being hunted down by the police.
