Students of Mpanga Secondary School in Fort Portal Town are in shock after a Senior Four boy was stabbed and killed by his jilted Senior Two girlfriend.
The Western Regional Police Commander, Martin Abilu, says 18-year-old Tadeo Bukya Kaboonabingi was killed on Saturday evening during a school dance.
Trouble started when Tadeo's girlfriend, 15-year-old Sheila Asiimwe Kobusingye asked him for a dance. For unknown reasons, Tadeo turned Asiimwe down and a few minutes later he was on the dance floor with another girl.
Eyewitnesses say Asiimwe was incensed by her rejection. She stormed out of the dance hall in a fury and returned with a knife in hand, stabbing Tadeo in the chest several times.
The officer-in-charge of criminal investigations in Kabarole, Enoch Ndyomugyenyi, says Tadeo was rushed to Buhinga Referral Hospital, where he died of his extensive wounds.
News of the student's death spread fast. Sheila Asiimwe was arrested by the police and detained at Fort Portal Police Station.
Tadeo's classmates put his body on a stretcher and marched through Fort Portal town baying for Asiimwe's blood.
Tadeo's father, Paul Kabonabingi, head of security at Rwenzori Commodities, and a group of his relatives arrived at the school shortly to claim the body. They blamed the administration of Mpanga Secondary School for failing to provide adequate security for the school dance.
The boy's body was taken to his family home in Rwengoma for burial.
