Security at Gulu Bus Park has been stepped up, a day after armed thugs ambushed a Kampala bound bus.
Under the new security measures, all passengers boarding from the bus park are expected to undergo a thorough security check before they are allowed onto the buses.
Passengers aboard a bus from Go-Transit Company were yesterday ambushed by armed gunmen who shot at one passenger and robbed more than seven million shillings from the passengers.
The ambush occurred at Nakitoma located near River Kafu in Masindi district.
Paul Okeny, the LC 1 chairman of Bus Park sub ward says that preliminary investigations into the ambush show that five of the thugs were booked onto the bus with their arms. One person has so far been arrested in connection with the incident and is being detained at Nakasongola police station.
Johnson Kilama, the Northern Regional Police spokesman, has cautioned traders against disclosing their travel days. He says that the traders are the key targets for robbers.
Several traders from Gulu, Pader, Amuru and Kitgum districts usually travel to Kampala using an early bus to enable them transact businesses in the early hours of the day.
