A teacher in Oyam district has been publicly caned for persistently being drunk on the job.
Alfred Aroma of Anyomolyec Primary School in Otwal sub-county, Oyam, was given 10 strokes of the cane by members of the school parents' association. He was paraded in front of his pupils, ordered to lie down and in full view of the entire school, was disciplined with a stick.
Moses Oyuku, chairperson of the Anyomolyec parents and teachers association, said Alfred Aroma had been warned on several occasions about his drinking habit. He said the teacher's alcoholism was affecting his performance and the performance of his students.
Early on Tuesday Aroma was found at a bar two kilometers away from his school. He was already visibly drunk and could barely stand up.
The canning appeared to have shocked some sense into Aroma. He apologized to his pupils and promised to reform.
In Oyam district, the LC5 chairperson, Okello Engola recently launched a campaign against the opening of bars before 5 p.m. Engola himself has taken up the cane on occasion to discipline public servants caught drinking on the job.
