Funding Shortfalls Could Affect More HIV Positive Patients

Health
More than 230,000 people could miss out on the vital anti-retroviral therapy program for lack of funding.
In June this year the World Health Organization issued new guidelines that require that all people whose CD count is below 350 join the ART program. In addition the WHO guidelines also require all HIV positive mothers to get access to ARV treatment.
Dr. Zainab Akol, the Program Manager, Aids Control program in the Ministry of Health says there are close to 180,000 people in need of ART's. In addition to the more than 50,000 HIV positive mothers are also in need of the ART's.
But Dr Akol says that it could prove difficult to spread out the ART program to more people because of shortfalls in funding.

Dr. Akol says that the existing drug stocks can only cater for people who have been on the ART program but not the new ones.
Dr. Akol however says that government has promised to double its funding to the ART program next financial year.
