Kumi District Police Community Liaison Officer has been arrested for the death of a nurse in Kumi town.
Robert Elungat, was arrested on Tuesday following the death of Anna Grace Aguti, a nurse who was stabbed to death by unknown assailants in Kumi town.
Aguti, a nurse formerly working with Kumi Health Center III, was attacked and killed on Saturday evening at around 8:30pm while returning home from work.
William Kaija, the Kumi Resident District Commissioner, says prior to her death, Aguti had a week earlier recorded a statement at police saying her life was in danger and wanted protection.
Aguti's police statement however does not detail the source of the threats to her life.
But Kaija says the District Police Commander had ordered the community liaison officer to take charge of the security of the nurse and to apprehend the people who were threatening her life.
Kaija says the community liaison officer disregarded the directive leading to the murder incident a week later.
He says following the murder, the district security committee ordered for the arrest of the community liaison officer and a special police constable identified as George Obanya who was deployed to guard Aguti's residence.
Kaija claims that there's overwhelming evidence linking the two police officers to the murder.
Celestine Ebulu, the Kumi District Criminal Investigations Officer, declined to comment on the murder and the arrest of the officers.
