Bishop Elijah Semugabi, the senior pastor of Christian Faith Center in Kampala who is accused of criminal trespass, was today released on bond and then sent back to jail again.
Semugabi is at the center of investigations into widespread child trafficking, extortion and fraud. The allegations against him are based on his numerous unfulfilled promises of scholarships for thousands of underprivileged and orphaned children. Pastor Semugabi reportedly promised the scholarships, granted he was paid 300,000 shillings per student to meet his overhead expenses.
Appearing at the Mukono Magistrate's court today, Bishop Semugabi was granted one million shillings bail for the charges of criminal trespass leveled against him. He is accused of establishing a school, All Saints College, on land in Kisowera on Kayunga Road without the permission of the landowners.
However no sooner had his bond been announced than Semugabi was rearrested and returned to Luzira Prison. The police say they are investigating separate charges against him, for which he has to apply for separate bail.
The details of the extra charges have not been released by the police.
Court was adjourned till March 5th, when the criminal trespass case against Semugabi is expected to begin.
