Five people, among them a Chief Judge from South Sudan, have been seriously injured in an accident in Gulu town.
Justice Ambrose Riny Thiik was traveling in his Sudan-registered Toyota Land cruiser when it collided with a pickup truck at For God Parish in Bardege Division, along the Gulu-Juba Highway. All the injured people were rushed to St. Mary's Hospital Lacor in critical condition.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Justice Thiik blamed his driver Wilberforce Mawanda for causing the accident. He claimed that Mawanda tried to overtake a speeding lorry despite poor visibility and the oncoming traffic.
Justice Thiik said it was the fifth time the 67-year-old driver was involved in an accidents in Uganda and Sudan spate of only three months. He said he suspects that his driver has a sight problem and should be retired.
The judge's car was crashed beyond repair.
Other people involved in the accident are Walter Okot, a resident of Bobbi in Gulu whose leg was broken. Denis Otim, the driver of the pickup truck is in a coma.
The Gulu traffic officer, Cornelius Mugisha, blames both the pickup driver and the driver of the landcruiser for causing the accident by over speeding.
