Bus Owners Abandon Qualicel Terminal

Business
Bus operators have today boycotted Qualicell Bus terminal following an increase in the loading fees. The bus operators are protesting the sudden increment in the loading fees from 50,000 to 75,000 shillings.

City businessman Drake Lubega owns, Qualicell bus terminal. Ssebaana Kizito, the chairperson Allied Bus Owners Association, says that they resolved to leave the bus terminal yesterday because they were not consulted on the new loading fees.

Buses that have been operating in Qualicell bus terminal are now loading passengers along Nakivubo and Allen roads worsening the congestion in the city.

According to Kizito, Drake Lubega has repeatedly increased the loading fees without consulting them. He also accuses Drake Lubega of charging them exorbitant fines of up to shillings 1 million if they default on paying the loading fees.

However Drake Lubega has stuck to his guns. Lubega says that he is not ready to reverse the new loading fees structure. Lubega says that he will construct a building in the place of the park if the bus operators are not ready to pay the fees.

Simon Muhumuza, the Kampala City Council spokesman says that they can not intervene in the dispute between Lubega and the bus operators because the park is private property.
