Police Alarmed about Rise in Road Accidents in Busoga

Crime
Reckless driving, over speeding and over-loading have increased the number of road accidents in the Busoga region.

Data from the south eastern regional police headquarters shows that 43 people died in 22 road accidents in the past month. Many more people were seriously wounded in the accidents.

The road link between Kampala, Jinja, Iganga and Tirinyi is the scene for most of the accidents. A police analysis of the situation found that most of the accidents involved large vehicles overtaking at corners or on narrow bridges.

Zurah Ganyana, the South Eastern Police Spokesperson, says the number of road accidents in the Busoga region is alarming. She says fatal accidents occur almost every day.

Ganyana says most of the accidents are hit-and-run accidents and the perpetrators are never caught. In other instances the accidents are not reported.
