Police Gun Thief Apprehended near Lake Mburo

Crime

A man, who allegedly broke into a police post in Mbarara and stole two sub-machine guns, has been arrested in Lake Mburo National Park.

27-year-old Mariya Mungu Mudasiru is accused of breaking into armory at Biharwe Police Post on July 3rd this year. He allegedly stole two guns and 59 rounds of ammunition before disappearing into the night.

Captain Wilson Katamigwa, the Lake Mburo National Park law enforcement warden, says Mudasiru was seen skulking around the park for several days before his arrest. He says the police were informed of this and on August 7th the man was surrounded by heavily armed officers.

Mudasiru reportedly attempted to resist arrest by shooting at the park security. The law enforcement officers responded in kind and disarmed him. He was arrested and taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment of wounds sustained during the event.

Lake Mburo National Park is located in Kiruhura district.
