A policeman has been shot and killed by a gang that raided Bushika Police Post in Bududa district last night.
Ibbin Ssekumbi, the eastern Uganda police spokesperson, says the gunmen attacked the police station at about 11:30 p.m. He says it is believed that they gained access to it by pretending to file a case there.
In the midst of the ensuing confusion, the gunmen grabbed Constable Jimmy Kelichan, who was on duty at the time. They dragged him about 50 meters outside the police post and shot him at close range.
Kelichan was alone at the police post at the time and details of the attack are scanty. Ssekumbi says it is likely the gang wanted to steal guns from the police post.
Several people who stay around the police post however say Kelichan was the victim of a love affair gone bad. They claim that he was involved in an extramarital affair with a fellow police officer, Constable Lindsay Kaahwa.
Some of the neighbors, who asked not to be named for fear or recrimination, said that during the attack, Kelichan's killers locked Kaahwa in one of the rooms in order to prevent her from stopping the murder.
This morning (Monday) the Eastern Regional Police Commander, Alphonse Mbuga ordered the arrest of the officer in-charge of the Bushika Police Post, Corporal Cephalus Kyagaba.
Ssekumbi says Kyagaba was arrested for neglect of duty.
