Opposition MPs Storm out of EC Vetting Committee

Opposition Members of Parliament today walked out of the appointments Committee that was due to vet Electoral commissioners for a second term in office.
Professor Ogenga Latigo, the leader of opposition in parliament led the match-out of the meeting chaired by Speaker of Parliament Edward Ssekandi.
But the vetting process proceeded with a majority of committee members from the ruling NRM party in attendance.
Outside the vetting room Professor Ogenga Latigo said the opposition team could not be party to the betrayal of calls to disband the current electoral commission which they say is biased and incompetent.

The opposition under the Inter-Party Cooperation has constantly demanded for a reform to have the opposition represented on the electoral commission in line with the multiparty politics. Professor Latigo warns that Uganda could end up in turmoil if the current Electoral Commission is not overhauled.

Engineer Kiggundu the re-appointed chairman of the electoral commission insists that he cannot allow the Kenyan scenario to occur in Uganda because he has a stake in the country's stability as a citizen.
