Kizza Besigye, the leader of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) says the major focus of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has been on the cultural division of Busoga and not development.
Speaking in Mayuge as part of his Busoga tour, Besigye said for two decades now, the Basoga instead of engaging in developmental programmes have been bickering over cultural positions, causing splits in all spheres of the region.
Besigye said Busoga's situation worsened when in 1993 Eriacase Kiregeya, backed by current Internal Affairs Minister Kirunda Kivejinja and the late Waako Wambuzi, supported by them Vice President Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, fought bitterly over the Kyabazingaship.
He said the scene is being re-acted by Muloki's son, Columbus Wambuzi and Prince William Gabula IV with the behind machination of the NRM.
The FDC leader also said the much-hyped Prosperity-for-All programme has only benefited a few well-off urban NRM supporters, leaving the majority rural Basoga impoverished.
He said this is evidenced in the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) programme whereby funds have been plundered not by peasants but by the well-off in Namutumba, Iganga, Kaliro and now Jinja.
Besigye said the outcomes of NAADS are completely different from its mission of increasing farmer access to information, knowledge and technology for profitable agricultural production.
He said the Basoga have not had time to think amidst confusion to ask for what they need, adding that there is an urgent need for change in order to alleviate the situation.
