Motorcylist Knocked Dead by Sugarcane Truck

Crime
A motorcyclist has been killed in an accident with a truck belonging to Kakira Sugar Works.

The accident occurred yesterday in Magamaga opposite the Kagoma County headquarters along the Jinja-Kamuli road.

The motorcyclist, Joshua Muyigo, was on his way to work at the time. He was hit from the back by the truck, which smashed his motorcycle and dragged his limp body for several meters.

Eye witnesses blame the accident on over speeding and reckless driving on the part of the sugarcane truck driver.

Moses Batwala, the Jinja LC5 vice chairperson, says he was driving behind the truck at the time. He claims the truck driver was going over 80 kilometers per hour on the narrow murrum road and lost control of his vehicle, causing the accident.

Batwala accuses the police of being complicit in such accidents. He says the police allow trucks without side mirrors, head lamps, non-functioning braking systems and old tyres to remain on the road.

Batwala says many of the trucks in poor mechanical condition ply the Jinja-Iganga route and can be removed by traffic police in order to avoid accidents.

The driver of the sugarcane truck accident fled the scene before he could be apprehended. The truck was towed to Buwenge Police Post.
