Masaka Councilors Charged over Buganda Riots

Two councilors of Masaka Municipality have been charged for inciting riots in Masaka town last week.

John Ssesimba, the councilor for Mukudde Zone and Peter Kikutte of Nyendo Senyange division appeared this afternoon before Moses Katorogo, Masaka chief magistrate.

Jennifer Amumpaire, the state prosecutor told court that the councilors and another suspect Herbert Buyondo, a teacher at St Tereza Bwanda secondary school mobilized pro-Buganda youth groups to riot last Friday.

They reportedly destroyed property on Elgin Street in Masaka town. All the accused, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Moses Katorogo, Masaka chief magistrate remanded the suspects to Masaka prison until 17 September, when court will consider their bail application.

After the court ruling the suspects were made to walk for more than one kilometer to Masaka prisons.

Pro- Buganda youths on Friday took to the streets in Masaka town to protest a decision by government stopping Kabaka Ronald Mutebi from visiting his subjects in Bugerere, Kayunga.
