Makerere Abolishes Fixed Dollar Rate

News
Makerere University has abolished a policy requiring international students to pay their tuition using a fixed US dollar rate.

International students have been paying tuition at a fixed dollar rate of 2020.

Sam Okorimo, the University Secretary says that under the new policy the students will pay their tuition using the prevailing market dollar rate.

The decision follows a strike by Kenyan students on Thursday protesting the fixed dollar rate saying that it was exploitative.

Okorimoh says that under the new policy both the university and the students will have to bare the effects of currency fluctuations.

The students accused the university exhortation because the market dollar rate has currently depreciated against the Ugandan shillings.

A dollar currently goes for 1890 Ugandan shillings.

There are over 2000 international students at Makerere University.
