HIV researchers to start antiretroviral-based microbicides trials.

Ugandan researchers in HIV/AIDS are shifting focus to antiretroviral-based microbicides, to test the drugs' abilities to prevent HIV Infection among women.
Dr. Patrick Ndase, the Africa Regional Physician for the Microbicides Trial Networks, says that the trials are meant to test the ability of these ARVs as pre-exposure treatment, to prevent HIV infection.

The researchers from the Makerere University Johns Hopkins University (MU-JHU) Research Collaboration are involved in two clinical trials using the antiretrovirals both in their pill form, and also modified into gels that can be smeared on the vagina before sexual intercourse
