Five people have been arrested in connection with their alleged involvement in minting fake currency in Lira.
The suspects, currently detained at Lira Central Police Station, were nabbed in an operation mounted by the Rapid Response Unit in Teso Bar and Senior quarters, both dangerous suburbs known for housing thugs.
Sgt. Alex Omwa, the RRU commander says the suspects are Osuman Ezuru, and Owashigui James. both were arrested from Tetugu in Teso bar on Wednesday. The others are Magole Albert, a resident of Jinja camp, Joseph Ocen, a local resident of Amolatar.
Denis Oola, the chief detective at Lira central police station, says Magole and his accomplices had gone to a drinking joint at Tetugu and started pulling out fake currency notes in the 5,000 shilling denomination to pay for their bills.
Hell however broke loose for them shortly after they started demanding for their balance. Its then that the bar attendant realized that she had been given fake notes. She quickly alerted some people who in turn alerted the RRU, leading to their arrest.
Oola says, the suspects will be charged with possession of fake Uganda currency note.
Gloria Adoch, the bar attendant at Tetugu, says she has for long been bombarded with fake currency notes until she decided to increase her vigilance on the nature of currency notes handed out to her.
