Dr. Naphline Akena Adoko, the former head of the General Service Unit is dead.
He succumbed to death last night at Kings College, Hospital in London.
Akena was the head of the dreaded General Service Unit from Independence until when the Obote I government was toppled by the late Idd Amin.
As head of the General Service Unit, Akena was both loved and hated.
In his capacity as the Chief General Services Officer Akena became outstanding for fighting for the release of persons who were wrongly arrested such as former Buganda Minister Abu Mayanja, Professor Dan Wadada Nabudere and Chief Margistrate Mpungu.
It was, however, in his capacity as President of the Uganda Law Society, that Dr. Adoko became internationally famous.
Dr. Akena organized the first and only East and Central Africa Advocates Conference which was a great success.
On the strength of the success of the afore mentioned conference, when he proposed in the Commonwealth Lawyers Conference in New Delhi, that the first Commonwealth Lawyers Conference be held be held in Uganda.
The conference was not held because of the 1971 military coupe. Dr Adoko first studied senior one and two at Boroboro before he moved on to Nyakasura secondary school from where he passed very well and was admitted for law at the University of Khartoum in Sudan.
It is not yet clear when and where the deceased will be laid to rest.
