WHO Investigates Nodding Disease

Health
The nodding disease, which had previously been believed to be Onchocerciasis could be a different ailment altogether.
A team of health experts from the World Health Organization, Ministry of Health and African Field Epidemiology Network pitched camp in Kitgum last months to investigate the disease.
Monday Busulwa an epidemiologist with the African Field Epidemiology Network says that it is too early to classify the disease.
He says that samples from over 100 children affected by the nodding disease were taken to Atlanta for testing.
Busulwa says that they are yet to establish what causes that disease that has affected several children in Kitgum district.

Busulwa notes that over 40 percent of the children affected by the disease in Kitgum and Pader districts have dropped out of school.
Children afflicted by the nodding disease start with nodding and later get fits.
The disease presents with malnourishment, dry skin with rashes, stunted growth and drooling.
It mainly affects children between 5 and 16 years.
