Justice Eludes 16- Year-Old Rape Victim

Police in Mbale has been accused of scolding and turning away a 16-year-old rape victim who had come to report a case at a police post.

The victim a 16-year-old girl who is a student in one of the secondary schools in Busia town was on Sunday turned away from Namatala Police Post in Mbale town where she had gone report a case of rape.

The victim calims she was raped on Sunday by three men but when she went to report the crime at Namatala Police Post shortly after the incident, the policemen who was on duty just laughed at her and sent her away.

She claims the policemen blamed her for what happened and refused to take her statement.

The victim who says she knows some of the perpetrators says she later reported the case at Mbale Central Police Station.

At Mbale Central Police Station she was asked to pay five thousand shillings for medical examination and some money for transport for the policemen to go and arrest the suspects.

She however did not have the money and the attackers have remained at large.

Ibbin Ssekumbi, the Eastern Police Spokesperson, regrets the incident and says those responsible will be brought before the police disciplinary committe.

Ssekumbi explains that rape victims are supposed to be examined free of charge by a police doctor.
