More than 1,500 pupils in Bugiri have been driven out of their schools by the gushing floods.
The Flood menace triggered off by heavy rains has affected pupils in Nabukalu, Muterere, and Buhemba and Nankoma sub-counties.
The footpaths that lead pupils to the various schools have either been rendered impassable or have been submerged in water.
Patrick Odeke, the head teacher of Syanyonja integrated primary school, says only 300 out of the 1,245 pupils enrolled in his school have been reporting for classes. He says that many others are stuck in their homes.
Heavy rains have in the past one week displaced more than 68 families. The affected families are in urgent need of food, shelter and medicine.
Kawo Nayi Kawere, the district inspector of schools, says his office is yet to establish the exact number of pupils missing school.
He has urged local council officials to find ways of clearing up the footpaths in order to drive the pupils back to the schools.
