Two Fishermen Drown in Lake Victoria

News
Two fishermen have drowned in Lake Victoria, after a boat they were traveling in capsized near Dolwe islands, in Sigulu sub-county, Bugiri district.

The deceased have been identified as Patrick Okiring and Shaban Musolo both residents of Dohwe islands.

Peter Mangeni, the Sigira village LC 1 chairman, says the fishermen drowned on Monday morning, after their small engine boat was hit hard by strong winds.

Efforts by another group of fishermen to rescue the drowning colleagues failed due to the strong tides.

The bodies of the two men have not yet been retrieved from the waters.

Deogratious Mwogerererwa, the Bugiri district fisheries officer, says Lake Victoria has recently experienced heavy winds making travel by water especially risky at night.

The fisheries officer says his office has since January this year recorded 10 cases of drowning.

Recently a passenger boat loaded with more than 100 sacks of charcoal, and 200 iron sheets drowned at Wayasi in lake Victoria, killing all the six people on board.
