Lightning Strikes Nine Pupils in Mayuge

Lightning has struck Igeyero primary school in Mayuge injuring critically nine pupils.

The incident occurred today during a heavy afternoon down pour.

The injured pupils are Jackson Katonte, Payada Kikaziki, Brian Kaalo, Laston Waako, Jalia Namususwa, Esther Nankombe, Moses Kabakubya, Julliet Buwala, Dalausi Luwogo.

The pupils were rushed to Iganga hospital by their school head teacher Moses Ebayu.

Richard Ngobi, an eye witness says that when it started drizzling they heard a loud thunder followed by smoke.

He says that when they rushed to see what had happened they found several pupils in comma.

Dr. Mohammed Lubega, who is attending to the pupils at Iganga hospital, says that the pupils have not yet regained consciousness.

Lubega says that the pupils have been put on drip and are being monitored closely by nurses.

Steven Kyakwise, Mayuge District Education Officer who rushed to the school shortly after the incident, says that it is the first of its kind in the school.


Igeyero Primary School has a population of about 800.
