Suspect Killed, Cop Arrested for Involuntary Manslaughter

A policeman who left his gun loose leading to the involuntary release of bullets has been arrested in Masindi.

Kenneth Tibaijuka, attached to Mobile Police Patrol detach in Buseruka, was arrested this morning in connection with the death of Collins Ochaka, a resident of Kijangi Landing site, in Buseruka sub-county.

It all started on Monday night when Tibaijuka and another policeman-Musa Gamusi were dispatched to Buseruka to arrest Ochaka. Ochaka was being wanted in connection with alleged elopement

On arrival at Kijanga landing site, Tibaijuka fired in the air after Ochaka resisted arrest.

Ochaka was finally arrested and the cops hired a boda boda cyclist to be taken to the police post. But along the way, the gun's safety catch gave way, releasing seven bullets, one of which shot and killed the suspect.

The boda boda cyclist, two civilians and Constable Gamusi were injured.

Zurah Ganyana, the midwestern regional police publicist, confirms that Tibaijuka forgot to close the gun's safety catch, resulting onto the involuntary firing of the bullets.

The injured persons have been admitted at Hoima hospital, while the policeman is being stained at the police station.

Mercellino Wanitho, the Midwestern regional police commander, blames his police officer for negligence and poor handling of the firearm.
